Writing lesson objectives that actually shape student learning

Bloom's taxonomy in 4 paragraphs, plus the verbs that beat 'understand'.

"Students will understand photosynthesis" is not an objective. It's a wish.

A real objective is observable. *Students will diagram the inputs and outputs of photosynthesis on a labeled chloroplast.* Now you can tell, from across the room, whether the lesson worked.

Replace `understand` with: identify, compare, construct, defend, design, evaluate. The verb is the lesson.
