🌐Short Vowel Fun: A-E-I-O-U!

This lesson introduces young learners to the five short vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u) through engaging activities, songs, and stories. Students will practice recognizing, pronouncing, and identifying CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words featuring these essential sounds. The goal is to build foundational phonics skills for early reading and spelling.

Lesson plan

Objectives

  • Students can identify the five short vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u) when heard.
  • Students can correctly pronounce CVC words containing each of the five short vowel sounds.
  • Students can match CVC words to corresponding pictures.
  • Students can write simple CVC words by filling in the missing short vowel.
  • Students can participate in simple conversations using CVC words.

Materials

  • Flashcards with CVC words and pictures (e.g., cat, pen, pig, top, sun)
  • Whiteboard or flipchart and markers
  • Short vowel song (audio/video if available)
  • Worksheet with CVC word matching and fill-in-the-blank exercises
  • Small objects representing CVC words (e.g., a toy cat, a real pen, a plastic pig)
  • Colored crayons or pencils

Warm-up

Start with a 'Sound Hunt' game. Say a sound like 'ah-ah-ah' (short 'a') and ask students to point to something in the room that starts with that sound (if possible) or a picture on a flashcard. Briefly review letters A, E, I, O, U and their capital/lowercase forms. Sing a simple 'ABC' song to get everyone energized and focused on letters.

Presentation

Introduce each short vowel sound one by one using a multi-sensory approach. For example, for short 'a': 'This is the letter A. A says /a/ like in 'apple'. Open your mouth wide like you're taking a big bite of an apple: /a/, /a/, /a/. Let's say some words with short 'a': cat, bat, hat, mat.' Show flashcards for each word. Repeat this process for short 'e' (/e/ as in 'egg', 'pen', 'bed'), short 'i' (/i/ as in 'igloo', 'pig', 'bin'), short 'o' (/o/ as in 'octopus', 'top', 'dog'), and short 'u' (/u/ as in 'umbrella', 'sun', 'cup'). Emphasize the mouth shape and sound for each vowel. Use a short vowel song or chant to reinforce the sounds.

Guided practice

Display flashcards of CVC words (e.g., 'cat', 'pen', 'pig', 'top', 'sun'). Say a word and have students repeat it, emphasizing the middle vowel sound. Then, ask 'What vowel sound do you hear in 'cat'? /a/ or /e/?' Have students point to the correct vowel letter on the board. Play 'Vowel Sort': Give students small CVC word cards. Draw five large vowel letters (A, E, I, O, U) on the board. Students come up and stick their word card under the correct short vowel sound. Provide immediate feedback and correction.

Freer practice

Divide students into small groups or pairs. Give each group a set of CVC picture cards and CVC word cards. Students work together to match the words to the pictures. Circulate and listen, offering help as needed. Alternatively, play 'Draw the Word': The teacher says a CVC word (e.g., 'bug'). Students draw a picture of the word on their mini-whiteboards or paper. This allows them to demonstrate comprehension and word recognition in a creative way. Encourage them to say the word as they draw.

Wrap-up

Gather students together. Quickly review the five short vowel sounds by saying a CVC word and having students shout out the vowel sound. Play a quick 'I Spy' game with CVC words: 'I spy with my little eye something that starts with 'c' and has a short 'a' sound in the middle... (cat)'. End with a final singing of the short vowel song. Ask students, 'What was your favorite CVC word today?'

Activities

  • Vowel Sound Chant · 12 minutes

The teacher points to a flashcard with a CVC word and picture (e.g., 'bat'). Students say the word, then isolate the short vowel sound, then say the word again. Repeat for many words. Encourage clear pronunciation and energetic participation. This helps reinforce the sound-symbol connection.

  • What's in the Bag? · 12 minutes

Place several small objects (e.g., a toy pig, a real pen, a small cup, a toy bug, a toy hat) in an opaque bag. Students take turns reaching into the bag, feeling an object, and trying to guess what it is using CVC words. When they pull it out, they say the word and identify its short vowel sound.

  • Sound Race · 12 minutes

Draw five large circles on the floor or whiteboard, each with a short vowel letter (A, E, I, O, U). The teacher calls out a CVC word. Students quickly run to or point to the circle with the correct short vowel sound. The first student to point correctly gets a point. This is a dynamic way to practice listening and identifying.
